Question   My Network Recorder program will not open and gives an message saying " # defined active channels. Key allows for # channels." - why? Answer   To get back into the Network Recorder you will have to delete a file and then reprogram the NR with the multicast addresses. This will reset the Network Recorder Multicast Table to factory defaults and will also enable you to run the program with a lower line Network Recorder key. After completing these steps you will need to reprogram the Multicast addresses of your IP-223’s that you want it to record: To reset the Multicast addresses in the Network Recorder, delete the file recordIP.telex  located at C:\Program Files\Telex Communications\Telex Network Recorder\DataFiles\ Reboot the Network Recorder and now you should be able to program the NR with the multicast addresses and then the NR program will run.             © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question   How do I set up Repeater Mode Linking using two DSP-223s?   Answer   Two DSP-223s are capable of creating RF links from console to remote base stations/repeaters, with the use of Repeater Mode. Repeater Mode introduces a 400 Ms delay in the TX path, and removes the Hold Tone/LLGT notch filter. When the DSP-223 at the far end detects the tone sequence, it PTTs the Base Station/Repeater, and passes TX audio, which is broadcast. As long as the hold tone is detected, it will hold the channel open. The reverse takes place with a receive signal present at the base station/repeater. This allows an RF link to be established with two mobile radios and two DSP-223s.  This can be useful as either a primary or backup link. This diagram shows two mobile radios configured to talk to each other.  They are connected to an analog console, and use Tone signaling. This allows control of the base station/repeater with Tone control.       To activate repeater mode, download the current configuration, check the “Repeater Mode” checkbox in the software, and write it back to the DSP-223.                 © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question   What does Dispatch products due in the cases of missed packets (lost due to jitter or errors)?   Answer   The products have a jitter buffer that allows for packets to be reordered if delivered out of sequence, if this buffer empties due to lost packets the unit will stop and restart once the "Packet delay before playback" buffer is filled.   The product looks at the source and destination address, when a correct incoming port number is recognized the unit will lock in on that source address an ignore packets coming from another source address until the first source stops sending then the second source has access. There is no protection against multiple packets from the same source address with the same multicast and port numbers as this shouldn't happen.  Add to this the same sequence bit in the packet (echoes) should never be allowed. Packets not received or lost before their play sequence (bit) time in the buffer are lost and next packets in the buffer pulled in.           © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question   How do I set up the DSP-223 for Optimum PTT Decoding?   Answer Figure 1 - A typical legacy analog radio system with a DSP-223 The most critical audio signal level in a legacy analog radio system, is the level of transmit audio from the console. It produces a signal that needs to be within a certain range as it arrives at the DSP-223/radio end of the system. Tone Remote Control (TRC) signaling must be within a certain level window, in order for the DSP-223 to decode it properly and reliably. With normal console functionality, the TRC levels and voice levels are calibrated relative to each other. Adjustment of the composite signal level at the console is sometimes necessary to compensate for line losses in the system. Figure 2 - Diagram of a Tone Remote Control burst Calibration of levels is primarily referenced to the Low Level Guard Tone (LLGT), it is typically -20 dBm. Voice then will fall into the window of approximately -20 to 0.0 dBm. The "Line RX" level pot on the front of the DSP-223 adjusts the Tx audio level coming in from the console. The DSP-223 sees audio from the console as "Line RX Audio".  This audio is then transferred by the DSP-223 to the radio via the Radio Tx line. The Radio Tx level adjustment potentiometer determines the level going into the radio, and thus, transmitter deviation. So decoder input and transmitter deviation are independently adjusted.   To find the optimum level for reliable PTT, first insure that the LLGT level is approximately -20 dbm at the input to the DSP-223. Some Motorola legacy consoles may produce a LLGT lower than -20, but the DSP-223 can work at lower levels if adjusted carefully.   Start with the Rx line level potentiometer at a low level (full ccw) and gradually increase it until the unit begins to decode the tone bursts, and indicated by the PTT led on the front panel. Repeated key ups are required while finding this point as the unit will not key off of just the LLGT itself. It requires the complete tone burst, which occurs then the PTT button is pushed on the console, to initialize a key up sequence. Key up the console at one or two second intervals while moving the Line Rx Level potentiometer, in order to determine the full range of decoding, which will occur over a portion of the potentiometers rotational range. The final set point should be approximately in the center of the arc where the decoding works. This helps insure that if the leased line electrical characteristics shift, as they typically will, the decoding of PTTs will continue to be reliable.               © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question   How can I troubleshoot IP Console and Gateway Audio Transport Across a Network?   Answer   On initial set up of a console system, often the most frequent problem is the failure of Consoles and IP-223s to communicate across the network.  Common causes of this are: Typos in addressing, such as multicast addresses and port numbers not matching on end to end devices. Firewall turned "ON" in console computers Multicast being blocked across the network due to router settings, etc Use of the Telex “VU Meter” program (download at http://www.telex.com/us/dispatch/file?i=97544&lg=eng) is an excellent and quick way to determine if data is present on the correct port numbers. Open VU Meter with the appropriate multicast address and port number entered in the blanks. Turn the program on. Send a test call on the TX or RX port numbers and see if VU Meter indicates digital audio activity. You may open multiple instances of VU Meter to simultaneously monitor TX and RX port numbers.  Verification that audio data is being sent out on the correct address, but not arriving at the far end of the network may indicate a problem with network configurations, that is, blocking of multicast traffic. Please note that some newer switches are intelligent enough to contain routing functions, which can be unintentionally enabled in some situations.           © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question   How can I create an appealing C-Soft design?   Answer   When our customers design their C-Soft consoles, often times the functionality of the designs are good but the appearance has a lot to be desired. Here are some basic tips on how to make a design that has a much more professional look, promotes dispatcher efficiency and operational accuracy, as well as cuts down on visual fatigue. - Use a uniform style and size on the design, as is appropriate.  Avoid mismatched font sizes. - Use contrasting colors for text and background colors.  Similar colors are difficult to read. - Use symetry in the overall design for a neat, balanced appearance. - Take advantage of the choices in global button styles.  - Use complementary colors in the design.  If in doubt, use a color wheel to choose compatible colors. - Take advantage of pop-up windows to conserve console real estate. - Take advantage of C-Soft's capabilities to add image files to the display background. Two examples of the same C-Soft design are shown below.  One is the way it was received from a customer (except the names have been changed). The second example is the same design that has been modified cosmetically only, except for the addition of mute buttons.  The difference speaks for itself. Figure 1 - The beginning design. Question   How can I better understand IP-223 jumper settings?   Answer   IP-223 jumper settings allow a great deal of flexibility in regards to the range of uses for the device.  Correct jumper settings are critical to every application.  Although many Telex application notes specify the required jumper settings for certain types of radio models, some radios are not covered and the technician must determine which settings are correct for their particular application. Explanations on the purpose of the settings are expanded upon here to assist in determining the best configuration.  Refer to the jumper chart in the IP-223 manual to idenfity specific jumper numbers based on the PCB revision.  2 Wire vs. 4 Wire Four wire mode consists of two pairs of conductors, one for TX, one for RX.  In the 2 wire form, the TX and RX signals are summed onto the same wire pair, which conserves resources but can also create problems in certain circumstances, and is generally more difficult to obtain a stable alignment with.  4 wire mode generally produces better quality audio than 2 wire mode. Balanced vs. Single Ended Locally controlled mobile radios are typically high impedance, single ended input and output lines.  Single ended refers to an unbalanced signal pair, in which one conductor is grounded and the other carries the AC signal above ground potential.  Radio audio impedances are generally considerably higher than 600 ohms, and may be 10K or greater.  Balanced audio refers to two conductors that provide forward and return paths, neither of which is referenced to ground.  Check specifications on your radio to determine which mode of connection is applicable. RX Input Impedance RX impedance may be 8 ohms, 600 ohms, or 10K ohms, depending on the source used.  A connection to a speaker for example would be 8 ohms.  Again, check the radio specifications to confirm the optimal value to be used. TX Output The transmit output level range has two options:  High or Low.  High is the most common value, but low may be required in certain systems requiring lower output levels.  Digital I/O Pull Up Voltage This jumper determines the pull up voltage for BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) channel steering bit lines.  It may be set for +5 volts, or floating (jumper set to hang on center pin).  This setting is determined by the radio requirements.  This jumper is only applicable to radios requiring BCD control. J23 This jumper needs to stay in the "B" position.  (It is intended for a future feature in the IP-223)           © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved.
