Question How can I troubleshoot IP Console and Gateway Audio Transport Across a Network?   Answer On initial set up of a console system, often the most frequent problem is the failure of Consoles and IP-223s to communicate across the network.  Common causes of this are: Typos in addressing, such as multicast addresses and port numbers not matching on end to end devices. Firewall turned "ON" in console computers Multicast being blocked across the network due to router settings, etc Use of the Telex “VU Meter” program (download at http://www.telex.com/us/dispatch/file?i=97544&lg=eng) is an excellent and quick way to determine if data is present on the correct port numbers. Open VU Meter with the appropriate multicast address and port number entered in the blanks. Turn the program on. Send a test call on the TX or RX port numbers and see if VU Meter indicates digital audio activity. You may open multiple instances of VU Meter to simultaneously monitor TX and RX port numbers.  Verification that audio data is being sent out on the correct address, but not arriving at the far end of the network may indicate a problem with network configurations, that is, blocking of multicast traffic. Please note that some newer switches are intelligent enough to contain routing functions, which can be unintentionally enabled in some situations.           © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question How do I set up the DSP-223 for Optimum PTT Decoding?   Answer Figure 1 - A typical legacy analog radio system with a DSP-223 The most critical audio signal level in a legacy analog radio system, is the level of transmit audio from the console. It produces a signal that needs to be within a certain range as it arrives at the DSP-223/radio end of the system. Tone Remote Control (TRC) signaling must be within a certain level window, in order for the DSP-223 to decode it properly and reliably. With normal console functionality, the TRC levels and voice levels are calibrated relative to each other. Adjustment of the composite signal level at the console is sometimes necessary to compensate for line losses in the system. Figure 2 - Diagram of a Tone Remote Control burst Calibration of levels is primarily referenced to the Low Level Guard Tone (LLGT), it is typically -20 dBm. Voice then will fall into the window of approximately -20 to 0.0 dBm. The "Line RX" level pot on the front of the DSP-223 adjusts the Tx audio level coming in from the console. The DSP-223 sees audio from the console as "Line RX Audio".  This audio is then transferred by the DSP-223 to the radio via the Radio Tx line. The Radio Tx level adjustment potentiometer determines the level going into the radio, and thus, transmitter deviation. So decoder input and transmitter deviation are independently adjusted.   To find the optimum level for reliable PTT, first insure that the LLGT level is approximately -20 dbm at the input to the DSP-223. Some Motorola legacy consoles may produce a LLGT lower than -20, but the DSP-223 can work at lower levels if adjusted carefully.   Start with the Rx line level potentiometer at a low level (full ccw) and gradually increase it until the unit begins to decode the tone bursts, and indicated by the PTT led on the front panel. Repeated key ups are required while finding this point as the unit will not key off of just the LLGT itself. It requires the complete tone burst, which occurs then the PTT button is pushed on the console, to initialize a key up sequence. Key up the console at one or two second intervals while moving the Line Rx Level potentiometer, in order to determine the full range of decoding, which will occur over a portion of the potentiometers rotational range. The final set point should be approximately in the center of the arc where the decoding works. This helps insure that if the leased line electrical characteristics shift, as they typically will, the decoding of PTTs will continue to be reliable.               © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question How can I create an appealing C-Soft design?   Answer When our customers design their C-Soft consoles, often times the functionality of the designs are good but the appearance has a lot to be desired. Here are some basic tips on how to make a design that has a much more professional look, promotes dispatcher efficiency and operational accuracy, as well as cuts down on visual fatigue. - Use a uniform style and size on the design, as is appropriate.  Avoid mismatched font sizes. - Use contrasting colors for text and background colors.  Similar colors are difficult to read. - Use symetry in the overall design for a neat, balanced appearance. - Take advantage of the choices in global button styles.  - Use complementary colors in the design.  If in doubt, use a color wheel to choose compatible colors. - Take advantage of pop-up windows to conserve console real estate. - Take advantage of C-Soft's capabilities to add image files to the display background. Two examples of the same C-Soft design are shown below.  One is the way it was received from a customer (except the names have been changed). The second example is the same design that has been modified cosmetically only, except for the addition of mute buttons.  The difference speaks for itself. Figure 1 - The beginning design. Question What does local mode in the IP-223 support?   Answer Local mode in the IP-223 is the most commonly used mode of the five that are available. It connects directly to the radio using a DB-25 connector providing TX and RX audio connections, COR input or VOX for RX packet generation and a PTT output line to the radio.  The audio connections to the radio may be single ended or balanced pair, impedances are selectable as required by the specific model of radio used and set via the IP-223s internal jumper settings.  Binary Coded Decimal code output is available for channel steering on radios equipped with BCD inputs, with seven bit lines are available which can select up to 100 channels.  The BCD digital outputs are custom programmable per function tone. Additionally, some radios can be controlled using serial commands allowing for an increased feature set, currently these are limited to the following: Kenwood TK-x80, -x90, -x150, -x180, -5x10 and NX-700/800 NXDN series EF Johnson 5300 RS and ES series Motorola iDEN Falcon series TETRA Supura   Please see IP-223 the manual for more detailed information.           © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question How can I mute my transmit audio coming back as receive on another line?   Answer In some radio systems, when several RF channels are the same to each other in frequency, transmitting on one channel can cause others to break squelch and make noise. Although this is in reality likely an RF problem that is best dealt with by addressing the root causes—antenna proximity, orientation, and TX power output levels, etc., Telex C-Soft can help mask these symptoms by providing audio RX blocks for selected adjacent channel lines. RX blocks programmed into C-Soft will automatically mute the lines selected in the list during console transmit. (Other Telex "hard" consoles also have this feature.) For example, if Line 1, a VHF channel is randomly causing three other nearby VHF channels, Line 2, Line 3 and Line 4 to unsquelch during transmit, RX block should be programmed for those channels as shown in Figure 1. This screen is found in Edit/Set up per line parameters/Frequency. Note: per-line mute buttons must be present in the design for RX Block to work. Figure 1 RX Block delay time RX Block delay, found in Edit/Global parameters/Audio, sets the amount of time in milliseconds, that the muting time is continued after console ptt stops.  This can be useful for masking repeater squelch tails and network latency of parallel line RX traffic, see Figure 2.   Figure 2                   © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved. Question I'm getting "MYSQL server has gone away." message when using Telex Database Reviewer program, why?   Answer Here's some information on that particular error message.  http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/gone-away.html We believe that the server has closed the connection to the Network Recorder due to eight hours of inactivity. Let's try increasing that variable to its maximum value. 1. In notepad, open my.ini  located at  E:\MySQL Server 5.0   or at C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0 2. Add a line somewhere under the [mysqld] header with the following text: wait_timeout=2147483 3. Restart the mysql service using Computer Management's Service list. 4. If you wish to verify that the value was set properly, open a command prompt and navigate to      E:\MySQL Server 5.0/bin. Run the following command:     mysqladmin.exe variables      You should see a long list of variables, including wait_timeout. It should have the newly set value.                     © Copyright Bosch Security Systems All rights reserved.
